Women who Wow: explanation and 1st women featured
My brother and I exchange alot of ideas. I'd like to say we share ideas but we don't always share the same ideas. We talk, chat, exchange, grapple, wrestle and gender-splain on a daily basis.
"You should write about women that do shit," says the good doctor. For those who don't know, my brother is a physicist. We'll call him Dr. Tom.
This suggestion rolls around in my mind. In my undergraduate I earned a degree in Women's Studies. Yeah. That is right. I have a degree in being a full time feminist. Which I took great pride in. Until I did shit like get married, have daughters, and hired a person to clean our house.
Here I am. 42 years old and wrestling with ideology that just seems too tribe-le for this full time teacher who just wants a peaceful evening at home with a good book and decent dinner. I ain't got time to sip my coffee from a "Fight the Patriarchy" mug while scheduling my next plan to attend a march. My t shirt should say- Bitch- I am the march. Enneagram 8: alive and loud and don't care what others think but do care what others think.
What is the point? I got you: this is a space where I want to feature WOMEN WHO WOW. Women who do shit that makes the 1st; the best. The blue balls in the tee box. I mean the top of the THE GAME. Leaders of the female persuasion. Women who are women but they also are good at something that means something.
Here is our first feature: Prof. Donna Strickland
Woman Wins Nobel Prize in Physics
Donna Strickland wins Nobel Prize in Physics
Strickland says: Follow your gut
According to the NY Times text: Marie Curie was the first woman to win the prize in 1903, for the discovery of radioactivity. The second was Maria Goeppert Mayer in 1963 for developing a model that predict the properties of atomic nuclei.
54 years passed. Cue Donna Stickland and her work with high intensity laser pulses. This is the 3rd time in history that a women has earn this prize. Strickland has been working with laser technology since the 80's, earning her PhD University of Rochester then researching as a technician at Princeton University. She was told not take risks like leaving academic track for research but decided to go her own way prioritizing proximity to husband. She did it anyway. Four years later she moved to University of Waterloo where she continues her work. Her husband followed. She lets her passion and joy of discovery fuel her work. As a pioneer in the area of lasers, she has revolutionized areas of transformitive research in industrial and medical applications (Longeway 2018).
Why is she a Woman who WOWs? Strickland is one of 209 individuals who have earned this prestigious honor. She didn't win the "Women's Nobel Prize of Physics." She earned it on the same playing field as men. She did it without accommodations or adjustments. She did it from the blue tee box.
PS: She worked at the University of Waterloo where Dr. Tom did his post doctoral studies.
