Sting like a bee
I asked my student's "When you hear the word writing I think ______." Most responded with "horrible." Some said "essays." One student asked me "How do you end that sentence, Ms. Halverson?" I took a breath and said "When I hear the word writing, I think about getting my ideas down." Some were disgusted. Some were stunned. Most could not relate. "I have a blog...where I like to share my writing." One student seems curious. Another scoffed and told me that's stupid. "What do you do write 'Dear Diary' and write about what you did that day? No body care about you." His stinging words floated around in the air. But that is how a person sounds who is __________ about connection. Fill in the blank with a million different words: afraid, scared, shallow...the list could go on and on. At the end of the day.... writing is a way to share to connect to attach.
